The premise is,
"The rebel fleet has a new prototype ship in development. The federation, however, has reasons to believe it's mostly stolen technology, spray painted over with the rebellion's colors. Disgusting."

It's probably just going to be a new ship, because I'm new to the modding community, but I'll see what I can do.

How many ships did you use to make it?

The base is the Elite Rebel Fighter, with a lot of recolored Lanius gibs in the back, because I like the Lanius designs, Kestrel engines, random Zoltan things in the sides to add more color, and an Engi plate on the top to add some variety to the top layer.

Not to be nitpicky but the design kind of gets lost towards the centre - I can't tell which part is what

Looks like ready to transform into a Gundam.

Looks quite good, the one problem is the asymmetric bit in the middle but apart from that, the combination of zoltan and lanius ships looks really good!

I don't know why, but part of this design is screaming Ion Intruder at me.

Hmm... seems like a good idea.
I'll have to find a way to incorporate that.

Could be some sort of rebel mini boss. Give it a Zoltan shield, emergency respirators and engi med bots. :D

Definitely getting Zoltan shield, but I'm really leaning towards weapon pre-igniter as an augment, so that it can crush ships quickly, unless they can withstand the initial onslaught.

Are there mods for FTL? Can I make mods? I have never done anything remotely close to this before

There are most definitely mods for FTL (at least the PC version)!
There are a good number of ship editors out there, one of which I'm going to attempt to get this ship to work in.
I'm really new to this modding thing, but making images I can do! Here's more info, by the developers themselves

is it okay if I turn this into an actual ship? I'll clean up the spritework a bit and make it playable

I've got the finished sprite done, and I'm working on converting it into a ship, but I'm pretty bad at balancing.
